City of Independence hires new Power and Light Department General Manager
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – The City of Independence today announced the hiring of Brenda Hampton as the new City of Independence Power and Light Department General Manager. This position oversees day-to-day operations of the Power and Light Department. Ms. Hampton comes to the City from Vista Energy, a Texas-based company. Her start date is January 22, 2019.
“We are pleased to welcome Brenda to the City of Independence and the valuable insight she can provide as we work through important decisions ahead for the City utilities,” City Manager Zach Walker said. “We are excited to welcome Brenda back to Missouri, and her leadership will be invaluable as we continue to address the many generational issues facing our Power and Light Department.”
As the Director of Regulatory Policy at Vistra Energy, Brenda Hampton coordinates certain regulatory advocacy efforts for Luminant Energy, Luminant Generation, and Dynegy, all subsidiaries of Vistra Energy. Vistra operates in 12 states and six of the seven competitive markets in the U.S. with a diverse generation fleet totaling approximately 41,000 megawatts. Prior to her current role, Ms. Hampton has held leadership positions in gas, coal and nuclear generating plants.

Ms. Hampton serves on the Board of the North American Generator Forum and the Texas Reliability Entity (Texas RE), who acts as the Public Utility Commission of Texas's Reliability Monitor and the regional regulator for the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC). She also holds elected positions on NERC, Texas RE, and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).
Ms. Hampton grew up in Kearney, MO. She has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri and a Master of Science in Engineering Management from the Missouri University of Science and Technology.
