City of Independence supports regional effort to attract Amazon’s second headquarters

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – On September 7, Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer, announced its plans to build a second corporate headquarters in North America. The project, Amazon HQ2, is being coordinated locally through the Kansas City Area Development Council (KCADC).

“The City of Independence is working hand-in-hand with the Independence EDC to provide our response to the Amazon RFP,” Mayor Eileen Weir said. “Our region is competing against metropolitan areas across the continent and it’s our opportunity to show the strength of the Kansas City area and our cities unique ability to collaborate. None of us can meet the needs of Amazon HQ2 alone. Independence’s assets are strong and will be critical to winning this project for the Kansas City area.”

Some of the criteria Amazon is looking for include metropolitan areas with more than one million people; a stable, business-friendly environment; and a willingness to think big.

“I think I speak for all of us in the region, when I say we are excited to hear the Kansas City area is being talked about for a project of this magnitude,” Independence Economic Development Council President Tom Lesnak said. “We have been working together across this region for years to ensure that we were ready to be called up when the opportunity came and now we see this work paying off. Independence has a lot to offer including a community that is excited about the future. The Kansas City region as a whole is a strong contender for this project and we are happy to support the KCADC in any way possible.”

Phase 1 proposals are due to Amazon by October 19.
