Palmer Center Activities and Events for November 2018
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – The Palmer Center at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO is operated by the City of Independence and is dedicated to the mission of improving the overall health of adults 60+. Hermann Christmas -- Tuesday, December 4 – 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Price is $90.
Experience Christmas Traditions in Hermann, MO. Tour the Hermann Farm Museum, including the beautifully decorated buildings in the First Settlement Village area of the Farm. After the tour, enjoy lunch at Hermann Cottage with a surprise guest. Following lunch, share the magic of Christmas at “Christmas Tablescapes” in Hermann’s Historic Rotunda in the park. Each table will be elaborately set and decorated to illustrate a unique Christmas theme. Enjoy warm cider, soft carols
and sparkling lights. Next is a guided tour of Hermann with a stop at Sugar Mommas, a candy store with all the treats you remember from your childhood. End the day with a tour and tasting at the Wurst Haus where you will see the processing area and how bratwurst is made. Free samples of brats and sausages will be available for tasting. Crossroad will provide a cooler on the bus for your purchases. This trip will require some walking on uneven surfaces. The bus for this trip will not have a lift. Deadline to pre-register is November 1.
Holiday Lights Tour -- Thursday, December 13 – 5:15 p.m. to 10 p.m.  Price is $25.

Come join the festivities and view the holiday lights as we drive through the Christmas display at Longview Lake. Next, head down to Crown Center where we will stop for some free time so you can shop or purchase a snack. When we depart Crown Center, we will drive through the Plaza, and then up Ward Parkway on our way to Overland Park where we will stop at Deanna Rose Farmstead to see their lights that are timed to music. Deadline to pre-register is November 29.
If you have registered for a tour and you have to cancel for any reason, it is in your best interest to find your own replacement. Please inform us of the change. If you can’t find your own replacement, the following will apply if you cancel the tour:
  • Before the original registration deadline—full refund minus a $5 processing fee.
  • After the deadline—no refund unless we receive another registration for the tour. If a replacement is found, you will receive a full refund minus a $5 processing fee.
  • We will do our best to replace your spot, by referring to the wait list. Refunds will be sent within four weeks after the scheduled tour date.
REMINDER: If you are signing up a friend for a trip who has not previously registered, you MUST have their name, address, and birth date and phone number.

Fire Safety Talk – Monday, November 5 at 10:30 a.m.
The Independence Fire Department will share valuable tips and information about fire safety.
Medicare Part D Sign Up – Tuesday, November 6 at 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Assistance will be provided to help you compare plans, check coverages and search for ways to lower your cost. Co-sponsored by CLAIM
Storytellers – Thursday, November 8 at 10:30 a.m.
Jim Two Crows Wallen and Linda Kuntz will be making a special visit for storytelling. You won’t want to miss this fun event!
Veterans Recognition Ceremony – Friday, November 9 at 10:30 a.m.
Palmer Center Dining Hall with the Independence Police Color Guard, Special Presentation, and Veterans Recognition.

Tech Talk: Medication Edition – Thursday, November 15 at 10:30 a.m. and 12 p.m.

on-line medical records or to learn more about your medications? Students from Research College of Nursing will be available to show you online resources for this.
Thanksgiving Luncheon – Wednesday, November 21 at 11:30 a.m.
Join us for our biggest feast of the year! We’ll be serving turkey, mashed potatoes & gravy, dressing, green bean casserole, cranberry orange relish, wheat roll, and pumpkin pie.
Reservations are REQUIRED and will be taken beginning Wednesday, 11/14 until noon on Tuesday, 11/20.
Cookie Decorating, Christmas Craft, and Tree Trimming– Thursday, November 29 at 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Get in the holiday spirit and join nursing students from Research College of Nursing for some holiday festivities, including decorating Christmas cookies, making a holiday craft, and helping to trim the Christmas tree in the dining room. Co-Sponsored by Research College of Nursing.
Seniors’ Christmas Celebration – Friday, December 7
at 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. $5 per person.
Doors open at 10:30 a.m. Muffins and pre-party entertainment in the dining room
from 9 a.m.—10:30 a.m. Get your picture taken with Santa, enjoy a holiday meal, enter the door prize drawing, and enjoy the pre-party entertainment. New this year—Reserved Seating. Choose the table you would like to sit at when you purchase your ticket. Tickets go on sale at Palmer Center on November 1.
