His detailed account of the Vietnam War while embedded with the Command Unit of the 1st Cavalry Division became a runaway New York Times best-seller and then\, in 2002\, film starring Mel Gibson\, We Were Soldiers. In 1998 he was awarded a Bronze Star with "V" for Valor for rescuing wounded soldiers under fire at la Drang. He is the only civilian to receive a combat medal from teh U.S Army during the Vietnam War. Joseph L.
