Workforce in Independence and across the nation is facing widespread shortages reflecting a complex trend in changing demographics, emerging talent requirements, and a shift in expectations between employer and employee. We have invited industry experts to discuss how they are addressing these current challenges as a means to identify talent, drive economic development and create opportunity.
TOPICS THAT WILL BE COVERED DURING THIS SESSION:

TOPICS THAT WILL BE COVERED DURING THIS SESSION:
- We will discuss the Work Opportunity Tax Credit. This tax credit could reach a maximum of $9,600 per employee.
- The Show-Me Heroes Program provides up to 50% of paid wages for up to 1040 hours of On-The-Job Training if your company hires a qualifying Veteran.
- The Career Skills Program allows a service member to work for your company for free.
- We offer free job postings/advertisement, job matching for all open positions, free job/career fair setup for employers trying to promote their business or fill vacant positions.
- We offer free business consulting, applicant screening, resume prep, workshops, interview space, and interview classes.
- We will discuss federal bonds starting at $5,000 to cover any thefts or damages from employees with a questionable background (ex-offender, bad credit, bankruptcy, etc.).
- We offer and market your Apprenticeship Programs.
- National Career Readiness Certificate and Work Keys testing and programs.
- The HIREVets Medallion Program is awarded by the Department of Labor to companies of any size who recruit, employ and retain Veterans.
- All the service above are at zero cost to the employer.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER:::Trence James with Missouri Department of Higher Education & Workforce Development Local Veteran Employment Representative Jackson, Cass, Clay, Ray, and Lafayette County’s
I joined the United States Army in 1998 from Houston, Texas and retired after 21 years of service from Fort Riley, Kansas. I have served our nation as a Senior Human Resources Manager and an Army Recruiter. I served in numerous stateside and overseas assignments; New York, Kansas, Missouri, Michigan, Texas, Bosnia, South Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Turkey. During this time I have managed organization up to 2,200 Soldiers strong. Before retiring from the U.S. Army, I graduated with honors from Post University in 2019 - Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration (Management).
I have a great passion for helping my brothers and sisters in arms better their lives and improve the workforce. I specializes in placing job ready Veterans into the workforce. For the past 3 years, have worked work for the State of Missouri – Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development. I have worked with hundreds of Veterans and thousands of employers throughout the community. My number one goal is to ensure that the Veteran and employer community is aware of all the great benefits and assistance that we can provide the workforce, job seekers and employers alike.
Personal Life –
I have three beautiful daughters; Kaitlyn 19, Sydney 16, and Taylor 11. I love the outdoors, hunting, fishing, golf, and woodworking.
