Independence Voters to Decide on $197 Million IndeGO Bond in April 2025

INDEPENDENCE, MO – On April 8, 2025, Independence voters will have the opportunity to cast their ballots on the proposed IndeGO Bond, a $197 million general obligation (G.O.) bond measure aimed at funding essential capital improvement projects throughout the city. The Independence Chamber Board of Directors has unanimously endorsed the measure, emphasizing its critical role in addressing pressing infrastructure and community needs.  City Manager Zach Walker provided details on the proposed bond issues during the State of the City address at the Independence Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Wednesday, January 15.

The proposed IndeGO Bond would fund a range of key projects, including:
  • Construction of a new justice center to enhance public safety operations.
  • Purchasing and upgrading the current animal shelter building to improve animal welfare services.
  • Comprehensive repairs to streets, bridges, culverts, and sidewalks, ensuring safer and more reliable infrastructure.
  • Preservation and updates to three of Independence’s historic sites, bolstering local heritage and tourism.
  • Renovations to the outdoor athletic complex, expanding recreational opportunities for residents.
“This bond initiative marks a historic moment for Independence,” said City Manager Zach Walker. “It’s up to our citizens to decide if we take this major step forward to improve shared resources and preserve what makes our city unique.” “From modernizing critical infrastructure to preserving our rich history, the IndeGO Bond is a blueprint for progress.”

The measure has garnered strong support from city leaders, business groups, and community advocates who see the IndeGO Bond as a pathway to sustainable growth and improved quality of life for all residents.

“The IndeGO Bond represents a transformative investment in our city’s future,” said Doug Cowan, Chair of the Chamber Board of Directors and the G.O. Bond Advisory Committee. “These projects will strengthen Independence as a vibrant, safe, and thriving community for generations to come.”

If approved, the IndeGO Bond will enable the City of Independence to move forward on these vital projects without delay, ensuring that the community’s infrastructure and public amenities meet current and future demands.
