(INDEPENDENCE, MO.) Friday, July 22, 2016 – Celebrate local fresh food and discover the key role that farmers’ markets play in bringing communities together around agriculture at the Independence Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market on Saturday, August 13.
Independence Health Department is partnering with the Independence Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market to invite residents to explore their local farmers’ market. Open for over 40 years, the market is an amenity for Independence citizens. It is one of the three largest markets in the Kansas City Metro area and serves as a way to promote local business and create access to healthy foods for residents.
Everyone is invited to check out the activities taking place at the market, located in the N.W. corner of W. Walnut St. and S. Liberty St., during the free event from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 13.
The farmers’ market will open at 6 a.m. with the free activities beginning at 9 a.m. There will be a free food demo by a local dietitian, fun photo opportunities, the Royals Moose Mobile, an opportunity to meet pioneering people (9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.), market tours, and music. Additionally, beginning at 9 a.m., the first 100 people to stop by the Health Department table will receive $5 vouchers to be used at the farmers’ market that day. Only one voucher is allowed per family and voucher must be used for fruit and vegetable purchases only.
The most important ingredient in this event is you. Visit the Independence Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market on August 13 to start—or celebrate—eating a healthier diet, try new foods, pick up produce favorites, and meet the people who grow your food. The farmers’ market is one of the best places to experience fresh, local, and healthy foods.
The market accepts cash, debit, and SNAP (EBT/Food Stamps). Get double your money when you use SNAP for Double Up Food Bucks tokens on fruits and vegetables. Visit the Market Office trailer for tokens and/or further details.
